Woman in pain needing an emergency dentist in WinfieldNothing is worse than a toothache. It can be impossible to sleep with persistent pain. Thankfully, you don’t need to toss and turn until you’re able to see your emergency dentist in Winfield in the morning. While many home remedies can get rid of your toothache completely to get the rest you need, you should still see your dentist. You might believe an occasional aching tooth is normal, it’s a sign of an untreated dental issue. Here are 6 tips to stay comfortable while waiting for your dentist’s office to open.

1. Take an OTC Pain Reliever

Over-the-counter pain relievers can reduce minor dental pain, like Ibuprofen and Tylenol. Despite home remedies encouraging you to make a paste of the medications to apply to the tooth, your dentist advises against it. Instead, take the medication as intended. You can also use a numbing gel containing benzocaine to help dull your discomfort; however, children under 2 shouldn’t use it.

2. Sleep with Your Head Elevated

Your sleeping position can affect your pain level. It’s best to prop your head up when you’re in bed. It will prevent your blood from rushing to your head. If it pools, it can cause your tooth to throb.

3. Watch What You Eat

You should skip foods that will aggravate the tooth, like those that are acidic, cold, or hard. It’s especially important to avoid them before bed.

4. Apply a Cold Compress

A cold compress can numb the area to make it easier to fall asleep. Apply it to the outside of your face before heading to bed. You can repeat this as necessary throughout the night.

5. Soak a Cotton Ball in Clove Oil

A common home remedy for toothaches involves an ingredient you likely have in your kitchen. Soak a cotton ball in clove oil and place it over the tooth. The natural solution is great for short-term pain management.

6. Rinse with Salt and Water

A saltwater rinse can reduce pain and inflammation. It can also wash away debris and clean the tooth to prevent any additional discomfort.

Visit Your Dentist Right Away

A recent study found 55% of participants had at least one toothache within the past 6 months. Although an aching tooth might be common, it isn’t an issue to ignore. Most often the pain is caused by a problem that needs immediate treatment, like a cavity, fracture, failing restoration, or infection. You’ll need to see a dentist quickly to have it addressed, so it doesn’t progress. They’ll pinpoint the source of the discomfort to provide the permanent relief you need.
